Introduction
For this unit I intend to look into how identity can be shown through photography, I will look at how the composition, colour, focus and lighting can have a effect on the amount of identity given away in a photo.
I will focus my study by looking at artist who specifically focus on showing identity through different techniques like multiple exposure, macro photography and Photoshop editing.
During my initial research I learnt a lot about my theme and where I wanted to go with this project due to personal growth and the general style of work I was producing when looking at artists such as ‘Beeckie0’.
The initial book worth of work I completed helped me move along with the idea of my theme as originally I was going to document the stages of my journey with trichotillomania but after a while the work became difficult as now I have moved onto the next stage of my journey it became increasingly difficult to capture the necessary images for my theme to work so I altered my theme to fit where I am personally and to open up new photo opportunities for myself.
The idea of identity came from my multiple exposure photos and the edits I created after looking at the work of the photographer ‘Beckie0’, from these photo shoots the idea of looking at the ‘two versions’ of myself in different situations that occurred in the different stages of my struggle with trichotillomania was the most prominent and reoccurring idea which occurred around the same time I began questioning who i am and what is my identity.
I will look at the work of artist such as Joanna Kustra because of her unique use of lighting techniques ad use of the monochrome effect. Also the work of Taipei, Taiwan creative collective Blanq have become a keen point of inspiration for y new theme due to the creativity used in both the setting up and taking the photo and the after editing.
(Third artist needs to be chosen)
I will explore this theme by using a mix of photo editing and photographic techniques such as macro photography, experimenting with lighting and different filter effects to see how colour changes the way a subject’s identity is seen or even hidden. I will also look into techniques using Photoshop and how they can manipulate an image to either highlight or hide the identity of the subject.
I will also look at how you can show identity through more unusual methods like using macro photography on people eyes as a person can be easily recognized by their eyes.
